Waukesha Foundry's work pours forth
Waukesha Foundry employee Emiliano Campos uses a grinder Wednesday to clean up a casting that will be used by Boeing Co. for winding carbon fiber. The foundry has enjoyed a 15% increase in sales in 2011 and anticipates a similar rate of growth in 2012.
Frustrated over roadside bombs killing troops in Iraq, the US military turned to Waukesha Foundry for help. The company had a patent for perforated armor that could be bolted onto vehicles.
Waukesha Foundry geared up to make 90 armored plates per work shift, producing USD 30 million worth of plates in 18 months. It was a lot of work for the foundry, which makes custom castings for highly specialized items, sometimes one at a time. Its electric bill shot up to USD 100,000 a month while it worked round the clock to produce the armor.
Mr Ken Kurek president of Waukesha Foundry said "We were going as fast as we could because the need was urgent."
As Waukesha Foundry enters its 100th year in business, defense contracting has slowed but the company remains busy making other castings, including tooling for Boeing Corporation's 787 Dreamliner and drill bits used in petroleum exploration.
Locally owned by Facilitator Capital Fund, the foundry generated USD 30 million in sales in 2011, up about 15% from the year before. Sales goals are USD 35 million in 2012 and USD 50 million in 2014.
The foundry has made metal cast parts for Harley Davidson Inc, Mercury Marine, AB Volvo, Rockwell Automation Inc, Oshkosh Corporation, Navistar, Caterpillar Inc, Deere & Co and many others.
