Auburn foundry to expand

Intends to hire 42 in $35 million upgrade of plant

metal Technologies Auburn plans to invest $35 million in a building expansion and new equipment as it creates 42 jobs, Mayor Norm Yoder said Wednesday.

The Auburn-based foundry now employs more than 200.Company officials have asked the Auburn City Council to phase in taxes on the project, which is scheduled to begin next year and finish in 2013, Yoder said. Plans call for $6 million in construction and $29 million in equipment, he said.

A public hearing and final vote are expected Jan. 17.

metal Technologies bought the former Auburn Foundry Plant 2 for $9 million in June 2005 after Auburn Foundry filed for bankruptcy reorganization in February 2004. Auburn Foundry estimated assets and debts of between $10 million and $50 million, respectively, in its filing.
The new owners, affiliated with metal Technologies Inc., in 2009 announced plans to invest more than $1.5 million to expand the product lineup and hire 52 workers, including 20 temporary employees.

The company makes gray iron castings for the construction, automotive and appliance industries.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered the company up to $325,000 in performance-based tax credits and up to $85,000 in training grants for the 2009 investment.
Company officials couldn’t be reached late Wednesday for comment on the types of jobs being created or wages they’ll pay.

Any new jobs are welcome in DeKalb County, however, where officials reported 9.7 percent unemployment for November.

Yoder is cautiously optimistic that metal Technologies’ investment is part of a regional recovery.

“We’ve had some pretty good news up here this year,” he said. “It’s good to see the businesses still in business are starting to invest.”

The national economy probably won’t fully recover, however, until the housing industry rebounds, he said, adding that’s just his opinion.
